Internship Multiphysics Simulation of Advanced Power Semiconductor Modules 80-100%

Power electronics is an enabling technology to increase efficiency and reliability of electrical power
transmission and conversion. Within this technology, the power semiconductor module is the
functional key component with strong impact on the efficiency and reliability of the system. The
electromagnetics and packaging team at the Corporate Research Center are improving ABB’s power
semiconductor modules by developing novel semiconductor packaging design and technologies and
by supporting our partners with packaging concepts, joining technologies and packaging materials for
power semiconductors. To support our team, we are currently looking for an intern. Are you an

Tasks
- Design of novel power semiconductor module layouts according to design guidelines
- Electromagnetic simulation of power modules to investigate effects of parasitics during power semiconductor switching
(ANSYS Q3D, SIMetrix)
- Thermal simulation of power modules to investigate power handling capability (COMSOL Multiphysics)
- Benchmark and assess different module concepts

Requirements

- Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Power Electronics or a related subject (advanced B.Sc.
or M.Sc. degree); official enrollment essential
- Strong interest in electromagnetic and thermal simulations by finite element methods; experience in these field is of
advantage
- Self-organized team player with ability to work independently and as a part of a team
- Pleasure in doing design and simulation work in an international environment
- Fluent command of English, both written and spoken
Non-EU/EFTA citizens, please note that a certificate from your university, showing that an internship is a mandatory part
of studies, is required for the visa application.
