Internship Power Semiconductor Modules Packaging & Materials

ABB Corporate Research, in close collaboration with varied ABB business areas, is developing the foundations for the next generation of ABB products. In Switzerland, ABB Corporate Research, located in the proximity of Zurich, employs 200 scientists from over 40 countries with expertise in automation and power technologies for manufacturing, consumer and process industries as well as power utilities.

 

Our Corporate Research unit is currently offering students the chance to join the Power Electronics Packaging team for a six-month internship from 2018, onward. The team's work is centered around increasing the efficiency and reliability of electrical power transmission and conversion. You will be given the opportunity to contribute to projects aimed at improving ABB’s power semiconductor modules by developing novel semiconductor packaging technologies and by supporting our business partners with packaging concepts, joining technologies, and packaging materials for power semiconductor modules. Tasks

- Support materials research and technology development relating to power electronic modules packaging

- Conduct applied research using various bonding techniques and materials characterization methods, cross sectioning, X-ray, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM)

- Perform experiments, in addition to evaluating and interpreting experimental results

- Contribute to process and materials optimization based on experimental results

- Help to prepare CAD drawings and conduct data analysis (Matlab)

- Perform thermal and thermomechanical modeling using commercial simulation tools (COMSOL)

 

Requirements

- Currently enrolled in a degree program in mechanical engineering, materials science, physics, or a related subject (advanced B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree); official enrollment essential

- Experience in laboratory work and expertise in sample preparation and material characterization techniques advantageous

- Strong interest in interdisciplinary work

- Self-organized team player with ability to work independently and as a part of a team
